Summary

The return of Cassie Dewell in Treasure State, the latest in the series that inspired the ABC hit series Big Sky, finds Cassie in Montana on the trail of a con man。

Investigator Cassie Dewell--now the lead character in this year's most sensational TV crime show, Big Sky, from Big Little Lies creator David E。 Kelley--is headed to Anaconda, Montana, in search of a slippery con man who has disappeared somewhere in the "treasure state"。 A wealthy California divorcee has accused him of absconding with her entire fortune, and wants Cassie to find him and get it back。 But Anaconda, a quirky former copper mining town, is the perfect place to reinvent yourself, and as the case develops, Cassie begins to wonder if her client is telling her everything。 Between searching for the con man and a second case, that of a rumored buried treasure somewhere in the vicinity that has led to a cutthroat competition among adventure-seeking treasure-hunters, Cassie has her hands full。

C。 J。 Box's newest Cassie Dewell novel, the highly anticipated follow-up to The Bitterroots, is full of more twists and turns than the switchbacks through the Anaconda Range。

Treasure State by C。 J。 Box is a very highly recommended procedural featuring Montana Private Investigator Cassie Dewell。Cassie has two investigations underway in this complex, entertaining novel。 The first one is finding the charming man who conned a wealthy widow out of millions of dollars。 She called Cassie to take on the case after the Florida PI she hired disappeared while tracking down a suspect to Anaconda, Montana。 Cassie soon learns that the case is bigger than she originally thought。Th Treasure State by C。 J。 Box is a very highly recommended procedural featuring Montana Private Investigator Cassie Dewell。Cassie has two investigations underway in this complex, entertaining novel。 The first one is finding the charming man who conned a wealthy widow out of millions of dollars。 She called Cassie to take on the case after the Florida PI she hired disappeared while tracking down a suspect to Anaconda, Montana。 Cassie soon learns that the case is bigger than she originally thought。The second case is an unusual one。 A poem is written by an anonymous author giving clues how to find a buried treasure worth millions and the search is on by treasure hunters。 Cassie, however, is hired by the anonymous man who hid the gold。 He wants to test his security by having her try to find him。 If she tracks him down, he’ll pay her a bonus of $25,000。Both of the investigations are complex, interesting, and full of intrigue, as well as surprises。 This is the sixth novel featuring Cassie Dewell, but it works well as a stand alone。 I need to go back and read the others in the series。Cassie is a wonderful character。 She's a smart, strong, intuitive single mother。 She's also a realistic character who is 40 something, worries about her weight, and has to wear reading glasses。 Cassie works hard and is very perceptive。 I loved the interaction with her family, however brief it was here。 The other characters were also interesting and memorable。Box does an excellent job plotting the novel and setting a fast pace while Cassie follows clues in both cases。 The narrative is mainly told through Cassie's point-of-view, although there are some alternating viewpoints。 The chapters are short and to the point, keeping things moving along quickly。 The chapter titles help the reader follow the action and the timeline of events。 The final denouement is perfect。 I highly enjoyed this whole novel!Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of St。 Martin's Press via NetGalley。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2022/0。。。 。。。more

TREASURE STATE is a vehicle that drives, as Montana's speed limits were once posted, at a "reasonable and prudent speed," which was something Montanans — and anybody driving through Montana — was permitted to define for themselves。 Some put the hammer down to the floor mats and called it good even if it wasn't so much to anyone beholding it; others careened across yellow lines and outside white lines, maybe sideswiped a guard rail or two, and possibly took out a few mile markers along the way, a TREASURE STATE is a vehicle that drives, as Montana's speed limits were once posted, at a "reasonable and prudent speed," which was something Montanans — and anybody driving through Montana — was permitted to define for themselves。 Some put the hammer down to the floor mats and called it good even if it wasn't so much to anyone beholding it; others careened across yellow lines and outside white lines, maybe sideswiped a guard rail or two, and possibly took out a few mile markers along the way, and you wonder how intact it'll be once it reaches its destination。 A reasonable and prudent reader can see it both ways; I see it more the latter than the former。 TREASURE STATE is wildly entertaining — and, at times, wildly implausible — and it goes out of its way to sideswipe some easy targets that it could, and probably should, have left alone。 But that part of it, I must admit is also wildly entertaining。 The plots, as C。J。 Box's usually are, could easily and more thoughtfully have covered a novel twice the size of this one, and in this one they come across at times more like plot concentrate than plot, and it makes reading something like drinking Hawaiian Punch straight out of the once-frozen can — tasty but too much。 A woman hires Cassie Dewell, Bozeman-based private detective, to find the handsome con man who took her for millions — and, oh by the way, the first PI she hired, who went missing in Anaconda, Montana。 Then she's hired by a nameless man who says he's planted millions in gold treasure for someone to find from the clues he's planted in a poem。 He wants her to find his identity — in the hopes that she'll fail as a way of proving his cleverness。 Lots happens, fast。 There's a crooked undersheriff, a shady local philanthropist, and a lot of menacing aggression。 There's also the return of two familiar characters in the Box universe — April Pickett, Joe's adopted daughter, who works for Cassie as an intern; and Kyle Westergaard, last seen in the third volume of this series as a boy whose attempts to be Huck Finn put him into deadly peril and into Cassie's path。 All very enjoyable, if not always believable (it takes a weapons-grade willingness to suspend disbelief to buy into how Kyle stumbled onto the clue that unravels the identity of the treasure-hunt mastermind, for one example)。 More enjoyable were the many, many sideswipes Box steers out of his way to take at the denizens of the Montana literary scene as Cassie tracks down the poet's identity。 One is an obnoxious author of high-testosterone thrillers: "“My guy is named Lynx Mattis and he’s a PI out of Philly。 Real badass。 Ex-Special Forces。 Wears an eye patch and carries a 。45 Sig in a shoulder holster and a 。32 in an ankle holster。 Drives a tricked-out Humvee and he has a cigarette boat in a slip he liberated from some baddies。 Oh, and he’s also a pilot。”Another is a paranoiac who's obsessed with catching COVID and doesn't understand why his publisher doesn't understand why he can't produce in light of the pandemic: “I don’t know what these publishers expect! They’re mad。 They seem to think you can write on demand like some kind of automaton。 They don’t understand the creative process—that you can’t just turn it on like a light switch and produce a hundred thousand words。”And yet another is a pipe-smoking, robe-wearing pretensoid who masks his insecurities with fluting bravado and bellicose opinions: "In my novel, we would follow four treasure hunters as they searched for the gold。 One would be a piggish heir to a fortune who doesn’t really need the money。 The second would be an ex-con who will do anything imaginable to thwart others and secure the gold himself。 The third I’m still working on although I’m sure my publisher would insist on a person of color or another minority of some kind。 The fourth would be a young boy or girl who needs to find wealth to pay for a life-saving medical procedure for their mother。 We would root for the fourth character, of course。”There's also another author character who will elicit knowing nods from anybody who's ever encountered anybody associated with the literary scene in Missoula: "Cassie once overheard a well-known mystery writer pontificate from his corner bar stool in Missoula, attempting to woo a young female grad student。 The author, who looked like a cross between a buffalo and a walrus, said, 'In Missoula if you throw a stick you’ll hit a go**am writer。 I wish more people would throw sticks。'"All exceptionally hilarious, and treasure-hunters of a literary bent might want to figure out who the real-life inspirations for these cartoonish churls might be。 But, even as I chuckled at these passages, I found myself wondering what they had to do with developing the characters who are essential to the plot, or advancing the plot itself。 At least this is high-spirited stuff, eminently enjoyable, and makes for a pleasurable return to tinal form for Box, whose last few Pickett novels have been sour, dour, spiritually depleted and full of angry libertarian slaps at New West liberals (which makes me wonder why he never holds up far-right yahoos for similar caricature)。 That stuff is present in TREASURE STATE as well, but at least it's kept to a moderate volume that never drowns out the rest of the story, which was not the case for the most recent Pickett novel, SHADOWS REEL。 In Box's world, all liberals are aggressively naive, willfully blind do-gooders humorously divorced from reality, and as shown in TREASURE STATE, he's got a particular animus for mask mandates, as embodied by Cassie's daffy sixties-hippie mother: "Isabel had reveled during the pandemic and Cassie suspected that she missed it: the masks, the social distancing, the judging of others。"There's lots of good lines in that same satiric vein: "It was beautiful country if you liked mountains, a huge blue sky, poor food, and too much distance between towns, he thought。""Since she’d become a PI, Cassie found it easier and easier to lie。"“'Bozeman isn’t Montana,' Duplisea said。 'Maybe it used to be at one time, but it sure isn’t now。'"“You look like what I hope a nanny looks like,” Jessie said。 “So far, the only applicants we’ve had are teenagers covered in tattoos and body jewelry or they look like they’ve just been released from the Montana state women’s prison。”In sum, TREASURE STATE has more than enough of what draws the reader into a C。J。 Box novel。 The special sauce is still there — his gift for creating a subtle and growing sense of dread, his almost peerless ability to make Montana (and Wyoming) come fully alive to all five senses; his talent for making even minor characters come to life through unique telling detail。 Even when his plots are less than watertight and his politics can't help but announce themselves in unwelcome fashion, C。J。 Box still has it。 。。。more

First of all, thanks to Minotaur Books for sending me an advance readers' copy of this book。This was my first C。J。 Box novel and what a ride it was! I had no expectation but found myself wanting more。 Even though it's the sixth Cassie Dewell's novel it's a solid standalone。 The characters are great, the storyline is catchy and you get all the answers you want by the end of it。 The writing style is simple but very enjoyable。 Treasure State is what I call a page-turner :) First of all, thanks to Minotaur Books for sending me an advance readers' copy of this book。This was my first C。J。 Box novel and what a ride it was! Treasure State AUDIO by CJ Box is a Cassie Dewell mystery, taking place in Montana, as always。 It is basically two mysteries, one being multi-pronged。 Cassie has gotten a call from a woman in Florida who has lost her private investigator and would like to hire Cassie, not to find him, but to pick up where he left off。 Candyce Fly was a woman of a certain age, and she was wealthy。 Well, she had been, until a man had bilked millions out of her。 She had hired a man named Spengler to locate the scum Treasure State AUDIO by CJ Box is a Cassie Dewell mystery, taking place in Montana, as always。 It is basically two mysteries, one being multi-pronged。 Cassie has gotten a call from a woman in Florida who has lost her private investigator and would like to hire Cassie, not to find him, but to pick up where he left off。 Candyce Fly was a woman of a certain age, and she was wealthy。 Well, she had been, until a man had bilked millions out of her。 She had hired a man named Spengler to locate the scum, but he had disappeared, too。 She wanted Cassie to find the gigolo and bring him to justice。 If she found Spengler, too, well, that would be just fine。 Cassie called Spengler’s office in Florida and sweet-talked the researcher there to send her all Spengler’s file on this case。 He had done a lot of work。 It turns out there were other women, too。 This man had stolen millions。 Her second case was to find the man who had written the poem which potentially held clues to finding a $3 million dollar treasure。 He wanted to to hire her to find him。 He was taunting her。 It was very odd。 Well, she could do two things a once。 Obviously there is a lot of nuance to both of these cases。 There are other people involved。 It actually was fairly easy for someone with Cassie’s skills and contacts to solve both mysteries。 But, while doing it she put herself and others in danger。 She did save at least one life, though, probably two。 They were complex mysteries, well-plotted, and well-communicated as each one played out for the listener。 Cassie is good, but even she misses things。 She has a gut that works well and leads her to solutions。 She is an excellent character and this was a good book。 Treasure Box was narrated by Christina DeLaine who was the perfect choice。 She had a slight western accent and spoke fairly slowly so she was ideal for Cassie。 She ekpt the story moving at a good pace, and generally did her job very well。I was invited to listen to an audio ARC of Treasure State by Macmillan Audio, through Netgalley。 All thoughts and opinions are mine。 #Netgalley #MacMillanAudio #CJBox #TreasureState 。。。more

I 've been waiting for the new Cassie Dewell installment, and it did not disappoint。 CJ Box delivers another well-plotted mystery with one of my favorite cast of characters。 It was fun catching up with the characters。 Don't read this book out of order; it's more fun if you know the backstories。 This installment has two parallel stories, one pretty brutal, and the treasure hunt a fun tag along。 Plus, Joe Pickett's daughter April joins the cast。 I wish April were featured more (but I'm sure that i I 've been waiting for the new Cassie Dewell installment, and it did not disappoint。 CJ Box delivers another well-plotted mystery with one of my favorite cast of characters。 It was fun catching up with the characters。 Don't read this book out of order; it's more fun if you know the backstories。 This installment has two parallel stories, one pretty brutal, and the treasure hunt a fun tag along。 Plus, Joe Pickett's daughter April joins the cast。 I wish April were featured more (but I'm sure that is to come)。 I listened to the audio version, and it was a bit strange hearing April portrayed by a different narrator, but I adapted。 If you are new to CJ Box, start his series at the beginning。 He's one of the most consistently good serial mystery writers around。 If you are a long-time fan, you'll enjoy this volume。 It's not my favorite of the Cassie Dewell series, but it's a solid story。Thanks to NetGalley for giving me an audio version of this book in exchange for a review。 。。。more

Cassie has been hired to find a con man who duped a woman out of millions。 She is also trying to find out what happened to a previous PI who has disappeared。 The book is told from multiple viewpoints going from the past to the present。 There are a few twists to the story, most of them I figured out。 This book is part of a series but could be read as a stand alone。 Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy。

All “chick lit” seems to be in shades of teal, whereas all thrillers/murder mysteries, yellow and blue。 The Best Seller shelf in my library is looking tragically homogenous。Second – This book is just not for me; both in the did-not-enjoy and the not-the-target-audience ways。I love a good murder mystery as much as the next bibliophile, but I found this one flat。The plot was fine, but the characters were especially shallow。 A person was either Good or Bad, with zero nuance。Added to that, the heavy-handedness in regards to the author’s feelings about Covid protocols? Those concerned are brainless, spineless, and heartless, whereas all the skeptics were brave, hard-working, and clear-eyed。 I get that Mr Box has to appeal to his base, but as stated, I am not that base。5/10Thanks to NetGalley, MacMillan Audio, and St。 Martin’s Press for this ARC。 。。。more

I think the Cassie Dewell character actually works better for providing the author a much broader realm from which to base the setting for these thrillers。 In short, this is a solid thriller。 While I could have easily done without Cassie's described longing for one of our ultimate bad guys, I understand why Box included the attraction to create some conflict。 One area that I found particularly interesting due to a family connection to the particular geography, is the author's decision to set the majority of the book in and around Anaconda and Butte, Montana。 If you know little of the area, you'll take away some interesting facts about this historic area, including its mining history, and Montana in general。 Fun fact? At one point, Cassie refers to the (real) 85 mile per hour speed limit。 Did you know that restriction has actually only been in place for the past couple of decades? Before that, there was no posted limit on many Montana roads and highways。This book hits the market on September 27, 2022, so make sure to consider a read if you enjoy the C。J。 Box thriller style and Western U。S。 settings。 。。。more

TREASURE STATE would have been a reasonably solid PI procedural featuring Cassie who is hired for 2 different cases that she works at the same time。 There is one for a wealthy woman in Florida who was swindled by a man for millions and who sent a previous PI after him - but then the PI went missing。 There is also a man who has set up an elaborate treasure hunt for millions of dollars worth of gold coins who has hired Cassie to see if she can discover his identity (if she can do so, then the hunt TREASURE STATE would have been a reasonably solid PI procedural featuring Cassie who is hired for 2 different cases that she works at the same time。 There is one for a wealthy woman in Florida who was swindled by a man for millions and who sent a previous PI after him - but then the PI went missing。 There is also a man who has set up an elaborate treasure hunt for millions of dollars worth of gold coins who has hired Cassie to see if she can discover his identity (if she can do so, then the hunt would not be as "pure" because learning his identity would lead to someone finding it rather than doing it through his clues)。 The cases were interesting enough, though the villains a bit cartoonish in some ways。 The reader is also brought into it a bit early for one case, so it did not have quite the same air。This could have been a pretty decent read for me, but I was particularly troubled by a scene that was added just to make a statement about COVID and those who are cautious。 It was misinformed and unnecessary to the plot。 Cassie visits the home of a writer who is concerned about catching COVID and asks her to wear a mask before coming into his house。 She makes sure to point out that masks are useless (which is not true - lots of research has shown that masks actually help save lives) and ridicule him for being concerned about COVID, when it is in fact still quite deadly for people and not something everyone is just OK with catching (she had it and is fine, so。。。 obviously that would be the case for everyone)。 I am honestly just baffled as to why this scene needed to be there at all, and it ruined the book for me。 Just a heads up in case you have lost loved ones to the pandemic or have concerns about it, this scene is just ridiculous。Anyway, I would not overall recommend the book。 It would have been a solid 3-4 stars, but I just can't support it。 Please note that I received an ARC。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

Listened to an Audio ARC from NetGallery。 While there were a few times where the sound quality was lacking, the store itself was good。

Montana private investigator Cassie Dewell is working on two cases in Treasure State, the sixth in the Highway Quartet series。 [Why is it book six of a series of four (the definition of quartet)? Middle of the road listen to for me。 I liked the narrator, although the laughs she elicited were very irritating。 I did not read the previous 5 books and feel this book could be considered a stand a lone novel。 Will I seek out other books in the series, probably not。 Although it was fast paced the story just didn't grab me。 A big thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review the book。 Middle of the road listen to for me。 I liked the narrator, although the laughs she elicited were very irritating。 I did not read the previous 5 books and feel this book could be considered a stand a lone novel。 Will I seek out other books in the series, probably not。 Although it was fast paced the story just didn't grab me。 A big thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review the book。 。。。more

*Audiobook and paperback arcs“It’s not OK but it doesn’t mean we can’t move on。”“Happy virus carriers!” 🦠 😷 This book had a lot going on。 It was a fun treasure hunting book with lots of corruption。 The character Cassie Dewell and how she is described in the books is a little different than how she is portrayed on the show Big Sky。 Especially regarding her snacking and eating habits。 Either way she’s pretty cool and I like that she sticks to her guns and takes no crap from anybody。 I really enjoy *Audiobook and paperback arcs“It’s not OK but it doesn’t mean we can’t move on。”“Happy virus carriers!” 🦠 😷 This book had a lot going on。 It was a fun treasure hunting book with lots of corruption。 The character Cassie Dewell and how she is described in the books is a little different than how she is portrayed on the show Big Sky。 Especially regarding her snacking and eating habits。 Either way she’s pretty cool and I like that she sticks to her guns and takes no crap from anybody。 I really enjoyed the relationship between Cassie and Kyle。 It was sweet and I loved how they looked out for each other in their own ways。 This is the first book that I’ve read in the series but I definitely wouldn’t mind checking out the rest of the series after reading this one。 。。。more

Whether reading about game warden Joe Pickett or private investigator Cassie Dewell, C。J。 Box knows how to spin a tale that makes readers keep turning the pages。 Although I like Joe, I have to admit that I have a special fondness for Cassie, and watching her solve the two cases in Treasure State was a real treat。Cassie shines in Treasure State, but so do the secondary characters: her new intern, April Pickett; her annoying mother Isabel; the young Kyle Westergaard who's determined to find the tr Whether reading about game warden Joe Pickett or private investigator Cassie Dewell, C。J。 Box knows how to spin a tale that makes readers keep turning the pages。 Although I like Joe, I have to admit that I have a special fondness for Cassie, and watching her solve the two cases in Treasure State was a real treat。Cassie shines in Treasure State, but so do the secondary characters: her new intern, April Pickett; her annoying mother Isabel; the young Kyle Westergaard who's determined to find the treasure no matter how hard Cassie tries to stop him; even the Lothario who roams the country stealing as much money from women as he can-- all these characters keep readers fully engaged in the story。Both cases Cassie is investigating are gems, and I love watching her mind work as she pieces things together。 She always works hard to be one step ahead of the bad guys in order to keep herself and all those she cares about safe。 It's refreshing to have the main character go out of her way not to do anything stupid。Having spent many happy hours out in the middle of nowhere (and closer afield) locating old mining towns in the mountains and deserts of Arizona and learning their fascinating histories, I soaked up everything Box had to say about Montana's mining past, in particular, the town of Anaconda, a town long considered to be the heart of the American labor movement。 Characters, mysteries, history-- Treasure State was downright fun to read, and I can't wait to see what Cassie Dewell gets up to next。(Review copy courtesy of the publisher and Net Galley) 。。。more

Fans of the series know that Cassie is a no-nonsense investigator who is great with complex cases- and new readers will be pleased to discover this will be fine as a standalone。 She's been hired by the man who started a treasure hunt with a poem left in a restaurant to find him。 That's right- he wants to know if anyone can find him, not the pot of gold。 And then she's hired by a woman in Florida who was fleeced by a con man who romances older women for their money。 Will these two fit together ex Fans of the series know that Cassie is a no-nonsense investigator who is great with complex cases- and new readers will be pleased to discover this will be fine as a standalone。 She's been hired by the man who started a treasure hunt with a poem left in a restaurant to find him。 That's right- he wants to know if anyone can find him, not the pot of gold。 And then she's hired by a woman in Florida who was fleeced by a con man who romances older women for their money。 Will these two fit together except that both men are believed to be in Montana? No spoilers from me but know that she's hired April Pickett (!) and her son Ben to help out。 This shifts between POVs- mostly Cassie, a PI, and a bad guy。 The writing feels a bit stilted in spots but is smooth in others。 There are good twists here (I was surprised)。 There's also unfortunate commentary against masks and making light of COVID which, although I realize reflect the character's views, disappointed me。 Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC。 A good read。 。。。more

Cassie Dewell faces corruption and evil in Treasure State。 I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator does a good job。 The people around Cassie are extremes in character - corrupt cop, charismatic con man, easily duped rich women and a loose lipped secretary who also happens to be Cassie’s mother。There is a treasure to be found and a poet trying to stay hidden。 Kyle from a previous time in Cassie’s life returns in this book。 The movement of time in the book between chapters sometimes became c Cassie Dewell faces corruption and evil in Treasure State。 I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator does a good job。 The people around Cassie are extremes in character - corrupt cop, charismatic con man, easily duped rich women and a loose lipped secretary who also happens to be Cassie’s mother。There is a treasure to be found and a poet trying to stay hidden。 Kyle from a previous time in Cassie’s life returns in this book。 The movement of time in the book between chapters sometimes became confusing。 Maybe this would be better in a written version? The book is an interesting mix of elements。 It did draw me in enough to have me declaring the villain a scoundrel and hoping aloud that Cassie wouldn’t be stupid enough to walk into a dangerous situation alone。The resolution felt a bit hollow to me。 I was glad to have a chance to encounter C。 J。 Box’s work and enjoyed a look at Montana。 。。。more
